Magna Carta Country Winemakers

Magna Carta Country Winemakers

How time flies, as they say. It hardly seems 40 years since the Wine Circle was formed. This was celebrated at the annual Gala Dinner Dance held in October. The Wine Circle now called Magna Carta Country Winemakers was formed in 1973 from a small group getting together in The George Inn snug bar including Len Pearce and Denys Webb and deciding to form a wine circle in Wraysbury. They then held meetings at The Champney Hall in Horton and later moved to Wraysbury when the Hall was built.

Then members made wine and brought it along for others to try and have talks purely on winemaking. Other nearby towns and villages with wine circles would visit and we would visit them for competitions. Gradually a social side developed for this and in the end we would either be holding club dances or visiting other clubs almost every Saturday evening. This has declined over the years, but our dances are always well attended.

The social side has developed more and more with 20 years of Old Time Music Hall and nowadays less members make wine, but irrespective of that the membership now exceeds 200 members, being one of the most social clubs in the village. When a talk is not on the subject of wine, a tasting of a memberís favourite wine is always arranged and club competitions for a favourite homemade wine are held throughout the year.
